Alison's Allies
As a breast cancer survivor, I recognize the importance of early and annual breast cancer screening, quality healthcare for those with breast cancer [surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, drug therapy, etc.], and on-going research to find better screening, better treatment, and maybe even a cure! I was blest in my breast cancer journey:
My breast cancer was found early [Stage 2]
I had outstanding health care professionals
My family & friends formed an amazing support team
My employer was extremely supportive
I had great health insurance
Not everyone is so fortunate! After being diagnosed with breast cancer, I decided it was important for me to 'pay it forward'. I formed the Alison’s Allies team in 2010 and we have been raising funds every year since to support breast cancer screening, care, & research, with a focus on health equity. The section on 'history' spotlights the Alison's Allies fundraising from 2010-2019. From 2020 forward, Alison's Allies moved its fundraising efforts locally through the University of Kansas Cancer Center and The Masonic Cancer Alliance, the outreach network of the KU Cancer Center which brings cancer research, care, and support professionals together to advance the quality and reach of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship in the Heartland. HISTORY of Alison's Allies Prior to 2021:
From 2010-2019 fund-raising efforts have benefited the Susan G. Komen Kansas Western Missouri (KCWMO) affiliate through the More Than Pink Walk™ (previously Race for the Cure). Alison’s Allies, with team captain Alison Banikowski has been recognized as the top fund-raising team in the metro area since 2010. In 2019, with changes at the national Susan G. Komen foundation closing local affiliates, the KCWMO Komen elected to donate the funds raised locally to a variety of local projects, which are identified in the Legacy Report: komenkswmo.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Komen-KSWMO-Legacy-Report-1.pdf . There is even a picture of the Alison’s Allies 2020 team included in the report! With these changes, Alison's Allies moved fundraising efforts locally.
